Travel Diary #48 : Hindu ceremony, flowers and chicken fights
Hi from Uluwatu, Bali 🌞
I’m back with some photos of the last few weeks and I have to admit, it feels good going out with my camera more often.
Meet Eve, a Belgian girl who lives in Uluwatu and has just launched her flower decor business. We had a lot of fun creating this boho / clean sunset photo series. She just launched her Instagram and website, so if you are into home decor and live in Bali, go check out her work!
2 weeks ago, we had to leave our favorite homestay. It was unexpected sad news. However, my unfailing optimism leads me to believe that this wasn’t a coincidence, but a reminder to appreciate time well spent. Or maybe I'm just trying to get my head around it.
One thing is sure, we were getting used to the confort of this place and starting to get lazy to explore the surroundings. I’m now glad that this change has given us a new impulse to get back on our scooters to new places.
We couldn’t stay away from Ancala that long… A week later, we were back there to attend a ceremony.
Every 6 months, a Hindu ceremony is organized to bless the land on which they have built. The Balinese attach great importance to the balance between man and nature and these rituals are essential to ensure a form of peace. We played along by dressing up according to the local customs and learned how to receive blessing. Here is what it looked like :
That same week, I was also introduced to cockfighting, a practice I knew little (nothing) about. I’m always amazed by the fact that when traveling, a day can turn into a whole new experience in a split second.
For the Balinese, cockfighting is an opportunity to make good money through gambling. I discovered chickens doped with vitamins and painkillers, trained regularly to beat their opponent in combat. A practice that may seem a bit cruel but is completely part of the culture of the island (the country? the region?).
That’s all for this weeks, folks !
See you in the next one !
